Kaiser Dog

I never gave a great introduction to our newest family member, Kaiser. Here are some things you may or may not know about our pup!


His age is uncertain, but we have decreed that his birthday is the day before Thanksgiving and he'll be turning four in 2016


He is very strong and loves wrestling matches


He has some new friends



He absolutely adores soft things





He is startled by nothing less than the city's jackhammers outside (or, of course, the air escaping an inflatable camp pad)



He looks good in everything




His main talent is destroying stuffed toys in 5 minutes or less, but only the ones we give him to destroy (which doesn't happen anymore for obvious reasons)



He's a good scale against which to compare all the mail Wil gets when he's gone



He's got the best nose this side of the Mississippi



He's the greatest dog in the entire world and we love him so much!

You may have noticed that the vast majority of my posts on this blog have something to do with food. I try to bring in travel, work, life, family, weather (I am an atmospheric scientist, after all, and we finally had a big snow here in Madison), but it really all comes down to food. It snowed here! Unfortunately, the city of Madison doesn't pull out the plows until after  the majority of snow has fallen.   On the plus side, our apartment complex looks like Narnia! I once asked a beloved family friend how to make a can of corn, and for a long time after that my specialties were sandwiches, scrambled eggs, and chicken baked in pasta sauce. Tasty, I'll grant you, but boring after a while. When Wil left for Alaska I decided to be more adventurous in my cooking, and I've been pursuing that ever since. I have been all over the country lately, and I am very, very tired.  Thankfully, in a few more weeks my semester will be over! I won't have to take classes any more, ever!  Unless I decide to go back for a PhD, but that is a decision that Future Sam will make. As you may have noticed, I try to share my cooking adventures on this blog because that's where I feel most adventurous.  I'll start with my success story from last week: Lemon-Cumin Chicken with a Spinach-Mint Pesto.  I know this sounds like a mashup of strong flavors that will be terrible, and I felt trepidation initially.  However, the marinade and pesto came together easily, and grilling chicken isn't difficult.  The one caveat I will list here is that this dish is not for the faint of heart!  The flavors, while not at all overwhelming, are bold--it's the cumin, really.  If you normally like things with cumin, you should absolutely cook this.  I'll put the recipe and link below...

Location: Cinque Terre, Italy

From Switzerland we traveled to arguably the most beautiful place on the planet: Cinque Terre, Italy. Some might prefer the Caribbean for sparkling, clear waters and tropical paradise-ness, but this has totally got it beat in my book! Cinque Terre, or "Five Lands", sits on the Mediterranean coast as part of the Italian Riviera. The coastline, the five cities that make up Cinque Terre, and the surrounding hills and vineyards are nationally protected and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area has been settled and farmed for about 1000 years, and is known for its wine, olives, anchovies, and pesto. Wil and I tried them, and they are all the best we've ever tasted!
