Stuff I've Made Recently: An Update

I wanted to show the final product made from my hand-dyed yarn, so I thought I'd make a post about some of the things I've made or been working on recently! They're cute and I like showing them off :D

This is going to be a shawl/infinity scarf combination piece. It's my second knitted item ever, and I'm really enjoying it so far. It's simple enough that a beginner can do it, but will soon be mixing in some lace/mesh bits to make it interesting.

A lovely couple is getting married next year, and I made sure to work on their Star Wars-themed cross-stitch wedding gift while watching Rogue One!

This is a preview, since the final product hasn't made it to the recipients yet. It's the cutest darn thing I've ever created EVER, and I cannot WAIT to show it off!

This is what I made with my hand-dyed yarn: my very first knitting project, a hat!

I love food. I made this chickpea vegetable wrap and it was delicious. If you're interested, it's a tiny bit of mayo on the tortilla for moisture, and then chickpeas, red onion, feta, lettuce, shaved carrot, cucumber, and orange bell pepper.

Another hat?? Crocheted this time, for Darin whose original hat I never finished and then realized was pretty bad and this is way better.

What do you do when you have a bunch of worsted-weight yarn from a yarn giveaway? Make beautiful slip-stitch wrist warmers with a pattern you and your mom found.

And finally, this cutie. I think I could improve on him in the future, but my first try did give me a pretty great squishy huggable whale.

You may have noticed that the vast majority of my posts on this blog have something to do with food. I try to bring in travel, work, life, family, weather (I am an atmospheric scientist, after all, and we finally had a big snow here in Madison), but it really all comes down to food. It snowed here! Unfortunately, the city of Madison doesn't pull out the plows until after  the majority of snow has fallen.   On the plus side, our apartment complex looks like Narnia! I once asked a beloved family friend how to make a can of corn, and for a long time after that my specialties were sandwiches, scrambled eggs, and chicken baked in pasta sauce. I have been all over the country lately, and I am very, very tired.  Thankfully, in a few more weeks my semester will be over! I won't have to take classes any more, ever!  Unless I decide to go back for a PhD, but that is a decision that Future Sam will make. As you may have noticed, I try to share my cooking adventures on this blog because that's where I feel most adventurous.  I'll start with my success story from last week: Lemon-Cumin Chicken with a Spinach-Mint Pesto.  I know this sounds like a mashup of strong flavors that will be terrible, and I felt trepidation initially.  However, the marinade and pesto came together easily, and grilling chicken isn't difficult.  The one caveat I will list here is that this dish is not for the faint of heart!  The flavors, while not at all overwhelming, are bold--it's the cumin, really.  If you normally like things with cumin, you should absolutely cook this.  I'll put the recipe and link below...

Location: Cinque Terre, Italy

From Switzerland we traveled to arguably the most beautiful place on the planet: Cinque Terre, Italy. Some might prefer the Caribbean for sparkling, clear waters and tropical paradise-ness, but this has totally got it beat in my book! Cinque Terre, or "Five Lands", sits on the Mediterranean coast as part of the Italian Riviera. The coastline, the five cities that make up Cinque Terre, and the surrounding hills and vineyards are nationally protected and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area has been settled and farmed for about 1000 years, and is known for its wine, olives, anchovies, and pesto. Wil and I tried them, and they are all the best we've ever tasted!
