Wir gehen nach Deutschland!

Guten Tag! Today, Wil, Grandpa John, and I head to Germany! I sing with the Madison Symphony Chorus, and we will be touring Brahms' "Ein Deutsches Requiem" through Germany for the next 9 days. I get to be in Ireland for 5 hours, sing at Bach's grave, party with the locals, tour castles, and eat delightful food...and I can't wait!!


Update: we've arrived in Ireland. I am tired,though I did get a bit of shut-eye on the plane.



Update: despite a late departure, we made it to our bus in Germany with the tour group! Today we drive to Freiburg, take a walking tour, eat dinner, and finally sleep. I'm hoping I know what day it is when I wake up, because I'm definitely not sure now. I have learned that half of Germany's roads don't have speed limits for regular cars, and that the 70ct. fee for public bathrooms means I don't have to be scared of them. I'll be honest, it's wonderful to use a clean public restroom.

You may have noticed that the vast majority of my posts on this blog have something to do with food. I try to bring in travel, work, life, family, weather (I am an atmospheric scientist, after all, and we finally had a big snow here in Madison), but it really all comes down to food. It snowed here! Unfortunately, the city of Madison doesn't pull out the plows until after  the majority of snow has fallen.   On the plus side, our apartment complex looks like Narnia! I once asked a beloved family friend how to make a can of corn, and for a long time after that my specialties were sandwiches, scrambled eggs, and chicken baked in pasta sauce. Tasty, I'll grant you, but boring after a while. When Wil left for Alaska I decided to be more adventurous in my cooking, and I've been pursuing that ever since. I have been all over the country lately, and I am very, very tired.  Thankfully, in a few more weeks my semester will be over! I won't have to take classes any more, ever!  Unless I decide to go back for a PhD, but that is a decision that Future Sam will make. As you may have noticed, I try to share my cooking adventures on this blog because that's where I feel most adventurous.  I'll start with my success story from last week: Lemon-Cumin Chicken with a Spinach-Mint Pesto.  I know this sounds like a mashup of strong flavors that will be terrible, and I felt trepidation initially.  However, the marinade and pesto came together easily, and grilling chicken isn't difficult.  The one caveat I will list here is that this dish is not for the faint of heart!  The flavors, while not at all overwhelming, are bold--it's the cumin, really.  If you normally like things with cumin, you should absolutely cook this.  I'll put the recipe and link below...

From Switzerland we traveled to arguably the most beautiful place on the planet: Cinque Terre, Italy. Some might prefer the Caribbean for sparkling, clear waters and tropical paradise-ness, but this has totally got it beat in my book! Cinque Terre, or "Five Lands", sits on the Mediterranean coast as part of the Italian Riviera. The coastline, the five cities that make up Cinque Terre, and the surrounding hills and vineyards are nationally protected and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The area has been settled and farmed for about 1000 years, and is known for its wine, olives, anchovies, and pesto. Wil and I tried them, and they are all the best we've ever tasted!
