Day One: The Send-Off

I've never made a blog before--I couldn't even keep up a journal for more than three days in a row when I was a kid.  But seeing as I just dropped off my husband at the airport for a year-long AmeriCorps stint 3000 miles away and I have no idea what I'm going to do with myself now, blogging might just be the thing.  We'll start with an introduction.

My name is Samantha and I'm a graduate student in atmospheric science.  I've always loved math, science, education, and the outdoors, and I hope that by the time I graduate I can figure out the perfect career that lets me combine all of those.  Dogs are my favorite domesticated animals, and wolves and dolphins are my favorite wild animals.  I cross-stitch, read, and watch Dr. Who, Game of Thrones, Modern Family...all the good stuff on Netflix and Hulu.  I got married to my husband Wil after we graduated from college.  We've been together for a year now!  I love him like crazy, and you can read about his adventures in Alaska here.

I'm trying not to think about Wil being gone, but it's not really working.  I think I got all my crying out of the way last night, but I'm probably wrong.  At least I get to see him every couple of months, which is much better than the last time we were separated!  I dropped him off at 8:30 this morning, and he should be landing in Anchorage at 12:30 tonight.  My mom said she wished she'd taken a picture--Wil was decked out in his travelling clothes and rainproof boots, while I was in plaid pajama pants, a tie-dye t-shirt, and a sweater.  Some ladies sitting around the airport looked at me funny a few times :)

      There's no "like" button, so this is for you: I like your post! And depending on time and how quickly I finish the multiple books and magazines currently in my queue, I might revert back to some good old trashy romance novels. I know where to find reviews for a bunch ;)

From Switzerland we traveled to arguably the most beautiful place on the planet: Cinque Terre, Italy. I need to finish projects! There are a few babies on the way for people I know so I want to finish some of my many works already in progress.  A lot of crafters work on one project at once but I am not one of those crafters. My attention span is not long enough to work on one thing for months, though, and my hands often need a break from craft monotony. Because of this I end up with something like six projects on the go at once, and then it catches up with me and I feel like I'll never finish.  So this month I'm focusing on only a few projects. This is the Honey Moss shawl by Andrea Mowry. I'm making it with a non-superwash merino from De Rerum Natura. It's so soft and thick and squishy and I can't wait to wrap up in it as it gets cold. This is a messy bun hat. I'm using a thick worsted weight yarn from Bumblebee Acres Fiber Farm in a delicious deep red. This month, these are the projects I will finish!

Location: Rome (Part III)

Ah, the wonders of cool autumn Michigan days! Wil and I made it home safe and sound, and now have only to worry about moving into our new home in a few days. In the meantime I have just a couple more blog posts worth of pictures...here we go! We planned our final day in Rome so that we could concentrate on the Via Appia Antica, or ancient Appian Way. This is the road that began in 312 BC and extended 350 miles to Brindisi, in the heel of Italy's boot! This is the road on which Sparticus and his army were slaughtered in 71 BC! This is the road on which St Peter met Jesus, before returning to Rome for his martyrdom! This is the road to which Wil and I tried to walk from our apartment, and the reason we ended up hopelessly lost in ancient farmland!
